The Problem
Insect Bite Hypersensitivity (IBH)
Insect Bite Hypersensitivity (IBH), commonly known as sweet itch, is one of the most prevalent allergic skin conditions affecting horses worldwide. Triggered by biting midges (Culicoides spp.), the condition can cause intense itching, skin damage, hair loss, open wounds and significant welfare concerns.
Current protective rugs provide a physical barrier against insect bites but do not address the microbial challenges associated with damaged skin and secondary infection.
NTec was established to explore next-generation textile solutions designed to support both protection and skin health.
The Science
Research-Driven Innovation
NTec technology was developed through doctoral research investigating advanced textile solutions for equine welfare.
The antimicrobial platform incorporates silver-exchanged zeolite technology integrated into performance textiles. The system was designed to provide sustained antimicrobial activity while maintaining the durability, breathability and comfort required for equine applications.
Laboratory evaluation demonstrated antimicrobial activity against clinically relevant microorganisms associated with skin contamination and wound environments, including:
• Staphylococcus aureus
• Pseudomonas aeruginosa
• Escherichia coli
• Acinetobacter baumannii
The technology has also undergone textile performance and environmental weathering evaluation to investigate durability under practical use conditions.
